Jason followed a fifth-generation Kansan to Newton — where he fell in love with her and with the state of Kansas. He plans to live here the rest of his life, and he hopes to help make Kansas a place that more people want to call home. Jason is the director of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://mennoniteabuseprevention.org/">Mennonite Abuse Prevention</a>, a nonprofit aiding survivors of sexual violence in Amish, Brethren, and Mennonite communities. He also works at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.grazingplains.com/">Grazing Plains Farm</a>, a fifth-generation dairy farm east of Newton. Running a nonprofit and working on a small farm require frugality, creativity, careful planning, and hard work. Jason personally navigated many of Kansas's systems of care in addition to serving two years on the Kansas Mental Health Task Force. His experiences supporting traumatized children, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xFPrSrNMogpMcRoc14ImpAD5BnPmLfvr/view?usp=sharing">losing a son to suicide</a>, and working alongside survivors of sexual violence drive his belief in the possibilities for Kansas systems to promote resilience and healing.Despite personal loss and amidst current local and national challenges, Jason remains optimistic about the future and aims to advocate for others at the Capitol, inspired by the Kansas state motto — Ad Astra per Aspera — to the stars through difficulties.

Jason is running for Kansas Senate because he recognizes the urgent need for representation that prioritizes the welfare of families, the accessibility of comprehensive healthcare, the nurturing of resilient communities, and the pursuit of policies that treat every individual with dignity and respect.

Jason’s Priorities

Jason will advocate for <a href="https://www.khi.org/articles/2024-medicaid-expansion-estimates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Medicaid expansion</a> and the protection of women's healthcare choices. He will work to reduce barriers to mental and physical healthcare across the state. Investments in prevention and early intervention will improve the lives of all Kansans and reduce long-term costs.

Healthcare

Jason will advocate for strategic investments in community childcare, early childhood education, and our public schools. He will work to increase teacher salaries and to fund special education, the arts, and creative models including ag-based and project-based learning.

Education

Jason will advocate for budgets that invest in the roots of our communities, the families who work to build the Kansas economy. He will advocate for lower property taxes, and he will expect the wealthy and big corporations to pay their fair share, recognizing that trickle-down economics doesn't work for regular Kansans.

Fair taxes and budgets

Jason will advocate for smart policies to lower property taxes, increase the supply of rental homes, and reduce barriers to expanded housing options in Kansas. Investments in affordable, energy-efficient housing build communities, strengthen families, and reduce long-term costs for the most vulnerable.

Housing

Jason will advocate for policies to protect the groundwater we depend on, to improve the land that feeds our families, and to preserve the natural world in which we live. Wise stewardship of our irreplaceable shared resources is essential for the futures of our children and our communities.

Water and soil

Jason will advocate for equal treatment and legal protections for every Kansan — regardless of wealth, social status, birthplace, first language, gender and identity, sexual orientation, skin color, chosen occupation, political affiliation, or any of the other factors that make Kansans colorful and diverse.

Equality

Jason will advocate for the legalization of regulated medical cannabis to provide doctor-approved treatment for pain, nausea, and other health problems. Kansas doctors are already recommending cannabis to their patients, and Kansas dollars are instead going to the billion-dollar cannabis industries next door.

Medical cannabis

Jason will advocate for sensible, evidence-based policies to reduce gun deaths. He believes that when someone, like <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xFPrSrNMogpMcRoc14ImpAD5BnPmLfvr/view?usp=sharing">his son David</a>, feels suicidal in Harvey or Sedgwick County, they should find it easier to get mental health care than to buy a gun. Trigger locks, safe storage laws, and waiting periods can reduce angry, impulsive, and irreversible actions.

<h4>Biografía</h4>Jason siguió a una mujer hasta Newton, Kansas&nbsp; quien representa la quinta generación viviendo en Kansas, Jason piensa vivir aquí el resto de su vida, y espera ayudar a hacer de Kansas un lugar al que más gente quiera llamar hogar.
